Training and Education : Customized Training : Truck Simulator
The Employ Florida Banner Center for Global Logistics uses simulation programs in teaching commercial vehicle driving programs. The system gives students a basic introduction to truck driving with several types of vehicle configurations simulated.
The system automatically assesses and tracks trainee performance. This system also enables its users to develop defensive, highway, cross-country, adverse-condition, convoy, tactical and advanced driving skills. Those skills include accident-prevention techniques, effective maneuvering on varied road surfaces, driving at night and in rain, snow and ice. Performance is assessed and tracked automatically, which permits the training to be tailored to meet individual needs. Students receive feedback through recorded playbacks of their performances.
"Getting into an actual truck for the first time without benefit of training on a simulator can be overwhelming for a student driver," says H. "Shep" Shepherd, CDL instructor for Florida Gateway College. "Training on the simulator eliminates this problem and the simulator training prepares the student for the actual feel of operating a truck and what to expect when they put an actual truck in motion for the first time."
The simulator is not only for new drivers; seasoned drivers benefit from the driving scenarios by improving their driving or detecting poor driving habits which need to be improved upon.
Teaching the seasoned driver on the simulator improves the overall performance of the driver which benefits the company by lowering maintenance cost, improving mpg, and increasing safety awareness.
The simulator is now part of the Banner Center's Mobile Training Unit. (Click on photo thumbnails on the right.)
